根据美国加密货币交易所的研究部门Kraken Intelligence所发布的2022/5月市场报告显示，在主要代币市值都下跌的情况下，元宇宙代币以近400%的增长速度一骑绝尘，成为一众虚拟货币的黑马，但同时也是过去三十天内价格涨幅波动最高（173%）的虚拟货币类型。
元宇宙代币是什么？广义而言，元宇宙代币是一种在元宇宙内使用的货币，是元宇宙的交易货币单位。而元宇宙，一言以蔽之，就是一个以区块链科技为基础、尽最大可能在线上复刻现实生活甚至超越现实生活的3D虚拟世界。在一般情况下，元宇宙代币的持有者可以存取虚拟领域中的多种服务和应用程式，也可以在现实生活中进行套现。加密货币形式的元宇宙代币可以兑换成法币，在WarziX、Coinbase和Binance等交易所中使用，而NFT形式的代币则可以绑定实体世界中如收藏品、艺术品等的相关资产所有权。
目前，具有代表性的元宇宙代币包括AXS、MANA、CDE、SLP和SAND，每一种都有独特的特性。例如：著名的SAND就是虚拟游戏世界“沙盒”（The Sand Box）中的功能型代币，用户可以通过使用SAND来创造一个由NFT驱动的世界；MANA则为Decentraland项目的代币，用户可以在其中通过MANA购买数位不动产，也可通过出租所拥有的数位不动产来赚取MANA。
尽管Kraken Intelligence的五月市场报告显示元宇宙代币的价格出现短期波动，但是各界普遍看好元宇宙的发展，资金仍然源源不断的涌入元宇宙代币市场。作为世界互联网巨头的脸书母公司Meta更是积极抢占元宇宙世界中的高地，在收购了以自由创作为核心的Crayta游戏后，Meta昨日宣布，将把Crayta现有的游戏创作工具整合到Facebook Gaming的云端平台上，让所有脸书用户都能够打造自己的元宇宙，降低元宇宙的创作门槛。按照这个发展速度，全球最大的去中心化应用（Decentralized Application, DApp）市场数据平台DAppRadar表示，元宇宙相关的项目将在今年内至少增加100亿美元。
